Roles

As we go through our lives, we are all influenced by our surroundings: the people we meet, the places we go, and the things we do. We have a role in all of these aspects and understanding roles in groups can help us to understand why people are how they are. Your role in the classroom may be a student, but your role at your community center may as a mentor or a teacher. Every role shapes us very differently.

  1. I agree that every role shapes us differently. I also agree that we are influened with our surroundings. The more you hangout with people, the more you get to understand them, and act like then in a way

  2. Yep. Many people change their attitudes while they change roles- of course a teacher acts differently to her husband than she does to her students. That's why different roles make life more interesting b/c you can try different things. Being the same role all the time would suck and be terribly boring.

  3. Can you explain this idea more? It is too quick and too vague. Roles change depending on the status yo have. So for example you may meet some guy in line at Starbucks and there is very little interaction, maybe you say hi. But late in that day you meet this guy again and this time he is wearing a police uniform and he is pulling you over. Now you are more defensive, more closed off to him. See how the status changes your actions?

Remember each post should explain some sociological idea and then relate it to your own life.

  4. I also agree, people with different roles often times have different views of how people act, like lunch ladies don't usually like kids because they're so obnoxious to them.
